Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup 1½ sticks salted butter
  • 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • cups granulated white sugar
  • 3 large eggs beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Two 1.55-ounce milk chocolate bars such as Hershey's, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces

Equipment

  • 8 × 12-inch baking pan
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Mixing spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Toothpick
  • Cooling rack or heat-safe surface

Method

  1. Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly spray an 8 × 12-inch baking pan with nonstick spray.
If an 8 × 12-inch pan is unavailable, use a 9 × 9-inch pan instead; the brownies will be slightly thicker and may require a little additional baking time.
  2. Combine the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined. Set the mixture aside.
  3. Make the Chocolate Base: Melt the salted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the unsweetened cocoa and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches the consistency of chocolate sauce.
  4. Cool the Chocolate Mixture: Remove the saucepan from the heat and transfer the hot chocolate mixture to a bowl. Allow it to cool slightly before continuing.
  5. Add the Sugar and Eggs: Whisk the granulated sugar into the slightly cooled chocolate mixture. Add the beaten eggs and whisk until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  6. Add the Dry Mixture: Stir the reserved flour mixture into the chocolate batter until incorporated.
  7. Finish the Batter: Stir in the vanilla extract and chopped milk chocolate pieces, distributing the chocolate throughout the batter.
  8. Fill the Pan: Pour the finished batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it into an even layer.
  9. Bake the Brownies: Bake at 325°F for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool and Cut: Allow the brownies to cool before cutting them into bars and serving.

Notes

  • Use an 8 × 12-inch baking pan for the stated recipe yield of 15 brownies.
  • A 9 × 9-inch pan can be used if necessary; the brownies will be thicker and may need slightly more baking time.
  • The chocolate-and-butter mixture should be stirred constantly while cooking until it reaches a smooth, chocolate-sauce-like consistency.
  • Let the hot chocolate mixture cool slightly before adding the sugar and beaten eggs.
  • Chop the milk chocolate bars into 1/4-inch pieces so the chocolate is distributed throughout the batter.
  • Freezing the chocolate pieces before mixing them into the batter can help prevent them from melting too much during preparation.
  • Allow the brownies to cool before cutting them into bars for easier serving.
