Ingredients

  • 1 box 15.25 ounces vanilla cake mix
  • 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
  • ½ cup water
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 can 20 ounces apple pie filling, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup caramel sauce at room temperature or slightly warmed, divided
  • 8 ounces frozen whipped topping thawed
  • ⅔ cup toffee bits

Equipment

  • 9 × 13-inch baking pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rubber spatula
  • Straw for poking holes in the cake
  • Wire cooling rack
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Method

  1. Prepare the Oven and Baking Pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Coat a 9 × 13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray to prepare it for the cake batter.
  2. Mix the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the vanilla cake mix, apple pie spice, water, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the ingredients for 2 minutes until the batter is thoroughly combined.
  3. Fold in the Apple Filling: Add the coarsely chopped apple pie filling to the batter. Gently fold it in with a rubber spatula until the apples are distributed throughout the mixture.
  4. Fill the Baking Pan: Pour the prepared batter into the greased 9 × 13-inch pan. Use the spatula to spread it evenly across the pan.
  5. Bake the Cake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 28–33 minutes, or until the cake is baked through.
  6. Cool the Cake Briefly: Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a wire cooling rack. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes while it remains in the pan.
  7. Poke Holes in the Cake: While the cake is still warm, use a straw to poke holes approximately 1 inch apart across the surface. Push the straw about halfway into the cake to create openings for the caramel sauce.
  8. Add the First Caramel Layer: Measure out ¾ cup of the caramel sauce. Drizzle it evenly over the warm cake, allowing the sauce to seep into the holes. Leave the cake to cool completely before adding the topping.
  9. Spread the Whipped Topping: Once the cake has cooled completely, spread the thawed whipped topping evenly over the surface.
  10. Finish with Caramel and Toffee: Sprinkle the toffee bits over the whipped topping. Drizzle the remaining ¼ cup of caramel sauce over the top to finish the cake.
  11. Store the Leftovers: Cover any leftover cake and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

Notes

  • Use a 15.25-ounce box of vanilla cake mix to maintain the intended cake proportions.
  • Coarsely chop the apple pie filling before folding it into the batter so the apple pieces are distributed more evenly.
  • Beat the cake batter on medium speed for exactly 2 minutes, as directed in the original recipe.
  • Poke holes about 1 inch apart while the cake is still warm, making each hole approximately halfway through the cake.
  • Reserve ¼ cup of caramel sauce for the final drizzle; use the remaining ¾ cup to soak into the cake.
  • Let the cake cool completely before spreading the whipped topping to help prevent it from softening excessively.
  • Thaw the frozen whipped topping before using it so it spreads smoothly across the cake.
  • Cover and refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days.
